Reinterpreting an urban nightscape through light — Mariatorget Park, Stockholm.

City LightScope

City LightScope reinterprets an urban nightscape through light. Working through four stages — daywalk + nightwalk, analysis, identification and conceptualisation — I read Mariatorget Park in Stockholm by day and by night, studying visibility, safety, spatial perception and the impact of light on the urban fabric.

I designed a dynamic scheme that shifts between modes: a Daily Mode of functional warmth from dusk to midnight, a Festive Mode of celebratory enchantment, and a Midnight Mode for tranquillity and safety. Together they revitalise the urban night with versatility and warmth.

The approach drew on Kevin Lynch’s theory of the readability of the city — reading its landmarks, nodes, districts, edges and paths to guide where and how light should fall.
